In Xinhui District,the art of cultivating tangerinesand producing Chenpi(dried tangerine peel)hasbeen perfected over700years.The district's orchardsnow span143,000mu(around9,533hectares),withnearly10,000families actively involved in thebusiness.This ancient craft has evolved into amodern economic driver,generating an output valueof23billion yuan in2023.

While orange peels are discarded in many parts ofthe world,they hold a special place in Jiangmen'sculinary and cultural identity.Chenpi is a staple inCantonese cuisine,used in teas,soups,desserts,andeven traditional Chinese medicine.Known for itshealth benefits,Chenpi is praised for its anti-inflammatory,liver-protective,and anti-agingproperties,with studies suggesting potential roles incancer prevention.

"The longer these peels are stored, the greater theirtherapeutic value becomes," said Ye Bolin, arepresentative of Meijiang Tangerine Orchard inXinhui. "They are truly a symbol of health andwellness."

The Chenpi industry has grown far beyond its localroots,producing over100varieties of productsacross six major categories,including medicine,food,tea,and even perfumes.The supply chain ishighly sustainable,with every part of the fruitutilized—the flesh is turned into juice,jams orfertilizer,and the peel is carefully processed intoChenpi.

Standardized production methods have helped localmanufacturers meet global demands,exportingproducts to markets in Hong Kong,Macao,Malaysia,Singapore,and the United States.ChenpiVillage in Xinhui has even opened a specialty storein the U.S.,introducing the product to a wideraudience,and making it a sought-after commodityamong overseas Chinese communities and beyond.

Chenpi has become a cornerstone of Xinhui'seconomy.As Ye noted,"Chenpi brings significantincome for farmers here.It's not just a product—it's away of life."The region's dedication to Chenpiproduction underscores the harmonious blend oftradition,innovation,and sustainability.
