Robin Ho

In northern Stockholm lies a lake wherecity and nature breathe together—

Råstasjön.

It does not seek attention nor appear in tourist brochures.

Yet beneath winter’s geometric ice,

in the flight paths of migratory birds,

in mirrored evenings and soft morning fog,

the lake reveals a beauty that transcends culture, language, and time.

Half a century ago, landscape architectSven A.Hermelinpreserved this space for the future city.

Half a century later,I document its seasons and its soul through my lens.

And duringNobel Week, these images may be seen by the world.

This is not only a preface to a photographic exhibition.

It is the opening chapter of a city’s memory—

a meeting of nature and humanity, science and poetry,

past and future.

If this lake can speak during one of Stockholm’s brightest weeks,

may its quietness and gentle presence

illuminate a corner of every visitor’s heart.

《Hermelin

(Sundbyberg),

  • Hermelin(赫尔梅林)——保护这片湖的人

In the northern Stockholm district of Sundbyberg

    lies a lake often overlooked—

    Råstasjön.

Situated between Scandinavia’s largest mall and its landmark stadium,

it remains astonishingly serene and ecologically intact.

The lake, its history, and the images I have documented

form a cultural triangle spanning generations:

  • Hermelin—the man who preserved the lake
  • Råstasjön—the natural heart of the city
  • Nobel Week—the moment when world civilization shines in Stockholm
  • Together, they embody one of the most essential yet hidden structures of Nordic urban culture.

Hermelin:The Man Who Preserved the Future of Nature

    Sven A.Hermelin(1900–1984)

Sven A.Hermelin(1900–1984)was a key figure in Swedish landscape architecture.

From1947to1962,he led the ecological planning of the Råstasjön–Lötsjön area.

At a time when global urbanization threatened nature,

he insisted on a visionary principle:

“A city must leave space for nature.”

    Because of his foresight,Råstasjön retained:

  • wetlands
  • bird migration routes
  • reed belts
  • pedestrian paths and open landscapes
  • He did not merely design landscapes—

he safeguarded the soul of the city.

Råstasjön:The Hidden Heart of Urban Civilization

Only those who walk around the lake through the seasons

    can understand its quiet power.

    Here one finds:

  • winter’s natural geometry on ice
  • flocks of migratory birds
  • the city reflected in evening light
  • cycles of life within the reeds
  • It reflects a core Nordic value:

Nature is not scenery—it is part of everyday life.

My images have reached over a million viewers worldwide,

    not because of technique,

but because people are moved by the authenticity of nature itself.

Nobel Week:Where the Spirit of Civilization Converges

  • Hermelin——

Every December,Nobel laureates arrive in Stockholm,

representing the highest achievements of human intellect.

    Hermelin’s ecological philosophy,

    Råstasjön’s natural poetry,

and the humanistic spirit of Nobel Week

    form a complete narrative:

  • Hermelin—designing the relationship between man and nature(philosophy)
  • Råstasjön—embodying urban–ecological coexistence(practice)
  • Nobel Week—expressing the highest aspirations of humanity(spirit)
  • Their convergence reveals the truest face of Nordic civilization.

Conclusion:Let the Lake Speak During Nobel Week

    Hermelin

    Hermelin preserved the space.

    I preserved the memory.

Nobel Week provides the window for the world.

As science and culture shine through the city,

    may this lake’s quiet presence

remind us of another dimension of civilization:

gentleness, humility, and the reconciliation between humanity and nature.
