Dear friends of the Nobel Committee,the Swedish Academy,and all the distinguished guests:

今天站在这里，我有点恍惚。因为在我的老家河南延津，村里人最隆重的奖，就是过年杀一头猪，请左邻右舍来喝顿酒。相比之下，诺贝尔文学奖实在太大了，大得我一时想不起应该说什么话。

Standing here today,I feel a bit dazed.In my hometown of Yanjin,Henan,the highest honor is to slaughter a pig at New Year and invite the whole village to a feast.Compared with that,the Nobel Prize in Literature feels overwhelmingly big—so big that for a moment,I don’t know what to say.

我的小说叫《一句顶一万句》，名字看似夸张，其实是生活里的真实感受。中国有句老话：“人这一辈子，说不清楚一件事。”我写书的时候，发现很多人活了一辈子，说了许多话，却总有最想说的一句没说出口；有的人一辈子只说过寥寥几句，却足够抵得上一万句的分量。

My novel is calledOne Sentence Is Worth Ten Thousand.The title may sound exaggerated,but it reflects a truth of life.There is an old Chinese saying:“In a lifetime,one may never be able to explain even a single matter clearly.”In writing,I found that many people spend their lives talking,yet never manage to say the one sentence they most want to;while others speak only a few words in a lifetime,but those words carry the weight of ten thousand sentences.

写作对我来说，就是在寻找那一句话。它可能出现在街头小巷的闲谈里，也可能藏在父子之间的一声叹息里，还可能在朋友举杯时的沉默里。作家的工作，就是把这些话捡起来，放在纸上，让人看见彼此的孤独，也看见彼此的温暖。

For me,writing is the search for that one true sentence.It may appear in small talk on the street,in a sigh between father and son,or in the silence of friends raising a glass.The writer’s job is to pick up these fragments and put them on paper—so that we see not only each other’s loneliness,but also each other’s warmth.

我常说，小说是写给不在场的人听的。一个人和另一个人之间，往往隔着一万句废话，才可能抵达一句真心。那一句话，能让人笑，也能让人哭，甚至能改变一生。

I often say that novels are written for the absent listener.Between one person and another,there are often ten thousand empty words before one honest sentence is spoken.But that single sentence can make us laugh,make us weep,even change a life.

今天的这个奖，不仅是给我个人的。它属于说话的人，属于沉默的人，属于中国广阔土地上所有在苦难中活过来的人。他们的话语，才是一万句的源头。

This prize today is not only for me.It belongs to those who speak,to those who remain silent,and to all the people of China who have lived through hardship and struggle.Their words are the true source of ten thousand sentences.

我也要感谢我的父老乡亲。因为河南有一种土话，一句话能说三天三夜，又能一句话把三天三夜的道理说尽。我的语言，就是从他们嘴里学来的。

I must also thank my fellow villagers.In Henan dialect,one sentence can be spun out into three days and nights,and three days and nights of reasoning can also be boiled down into one sentence.That is where my language comes from.

最后，我想用一句简单的话结束今天的讲话：

Let me end with a simple line:

“文学的价值，不在于它有多少句，而在于它有没有一句，能让人听懂。”

“The value of literature lies not in how many sentences it has,but in whether there is one sentence that people can truly understand.”
