Overseas Chinese Media Spotlight Xijiang’s Golden Waterway:A Billion-Ton Port Powers Regional Integration
In the height of summer, the Chishui Port Area in Wuzhou,Guangxi,is a hive of activity.Vessels loaded with ore, building materials, grain, and containers crisscross the waters, while massive gantry cranes swing efficiently into motion, orchestrating the region’s booming waterborne logistics.
On June25,media representatives participating in the2025Overseas Chinese Media Guangxi Tour visited the Chishui Port Area to explore the development of the Xijiang Golden Waterway, gaining firsthand insight into the vibrant momentum of this vital artery.

Located at the confluence of the Xi,Xun,and Gui rivers,Wuzhou channels more than85%of Guangxi’s water flow into the Xijiang River.Capitalizing on this natural advantage,Wuzhou has rapidly developed port-centric industries, attracting enterprises involved in the deep processing of building materials, new energy materials, and equipment manufacturing. This has fostered a“port-industry integration”model where ports drive industrial clustering and regional economic coordination.In2024,Wuzhou Port’s cargo throughput exceeded100million tons for the first time,reaching109million tons—a year-on-year growth of36.18%.
As one of China’s36major inland ports,Wuzhou Port continues to evolve under a unified model of planning, construction, and operations across its three core port zones:Central Wuzhou,Cangwu, and Tengxian.Shoreline development expanded from24kilometers in2023to32kilometers in2024,laying solid groundwork for long-term capacity growth.
The Changzhou Ship Lock—dubbed the“gateway”to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area(GBA)—handled over224million tons of cargo in2024,a22.06%increase from the previous year and a national record for natural river locks.Downstream,176million tons of materials, mainly ore and cement, flowed southward to fuel the GBA’s infrastructure and industrial demands.
Currently,Wuzhou is prioritizing development of three major port areas:Chishui,Tangyuan, and Pinglang.Chishui has completed15berths,with an on-site railway line undergoing upgrades to boost annual capacity to12million tons.Tangyuan is planning six new berths with supporting green corridors, while Pinglang aims to add nine berths and a dedicated rail link.

Liang Yafeng,Vice General Manager of Guangxi Xijiang Port Chishui Port Co.,Ltd.,emphasized that the seamless operation of the Xijiang Golden Waterway has enabled Wuzhou and Guangxi to integrate more deeply with the GBA.The regular year-round navigation of3,000-ton vessels to the Bay Area has slashed transportation costs and improved logistics reliability.
“Previously, transporting raw materials to the GBA by land was time-consuming and costly,”Liang explained.“Now,shipping by water saves nearly30%in logistics costs while ensuring timely delivery. The Xijiang Golden Waterway not only cuts expenses but also enhances regional industrial collaboration and supply chain integration.”
Wuzhou continues to upgrade the Xijiang shipping channel(Wuzhou section),accelerate port specialization, and promote multimodal transportation systems.Once the Pinglu Canal is completed, the Xijiang route will connect directly to the Beibu Gulf International Gateway Port, positioning Wuzhou as a critical hub linking the GBA,the canal, and China’s southwest region.
Qian Guohua,Vice President of Hong Kong International Satellite TV,remarked that the success of the Xijiang Golden Waterway goes far beyond shipping.“It significantly reduces regional logistics costs and functions as a key artery for economic expansion, powering the rise of the Xijiang industrial belt,”he said.“With its competitive edge in water transport,Wuzhou and other Xijiang cities are ideally placed to collaborate with the GBA in industrial transfer, economic transformation, and regional integration.”
Liu Lin,Editor-in-Chief of Hong Kong News Agency, noted that the visit highlighted the vitality of Wuzhou Port and showcased the strategic importance of the Xijiang Golden Waterway.“The modernization of the Chishui Port Area reflects China’s broader efforts to advance inland shipping and integrated transport. It demonstrates a high level of regional coordination and openness,”she said.“As overseas Chinese media,we are committed to conveying the energy of Wuzhou and the Xijiang to global audiences.”
Wang Tielong,Cultural Editor of Nordic Times, shared a personal anecdote from2017,when he organized a cultural tourism event in Wuzhou’s Qilou City that drew such massive crowds it overwhelmed local infrastructure and had to be halted by the authorities.“It proved to me how strong Wuzhou’s cultural appeal really is,”he said.Upon returning this time,Wang observed that Qilou City is now thriving, welcoming around20,000visitors daily—a testament to the city’s growing tourism success.
