The Great Wall Stretches for Ten Thousand Miles,Peace Lasts for Ten Thousand Years—From Badaling to Northern Europe,Echoes of History
On a midsummer night in Stockholm,Sweden,a Nordic“pirate-like”friend once joked with me:“My Swedish name is Lars, and my Chinese surname is Liao—the same‘Liao’as the Liao people near Beijing.Speaking of the Great Wall,it is the greatest defensive project in human history. But do you know? From Beijing to Northern Europe is nearly ten thousand kilometers. If the Great Wall were stretched out,it could almost reach us.I just hope your Wall doesn’t end up encircling Northern Europe! We also have castles, even the small city wall of Gotland, the size of a courtyard. But compared to your Great Wall, ours is truly insignificant.”
Badaling:A Majestic Pass and a Shared Memory of Humanity
The Badaling Great Wall, located in Yanqing,Beijing, winds through mountains like a giant dragon.Ancient Chinese once said,“The danger of Juyong Pass lies not in the pass itself, but at Badaling,”highlighting its military importance. Its towering walls, with battlements on both sides, not only repelled enemies but also embodied the wisdom and labor of countless workers.
Standing atop Badaling, overlooking the rolling mountains, one feels a profound connection across time.Since its construction in the Ming Dynasty,it has stood not only as a shield for the capital but also as a symbol of the indomitable Chinese spirit.Today,as a UNESCO World Heritage site,it attracts tens of millions of visitors annually, including over500foreign leaders.
A Peaceful Nation and a History of Repeated Invasions
Since the Qin and Han dynasties, the Chinese nation has never sought conquest. The Great Wall was built as a symbol of defense, not expansion.History repeatedly proves that the Chinese people have longed for peaceful cultivation and stable life.
Yet,from the Opium War to the Sino-Japanese War of1894,from the Eight-Nation Alliance to Japan’s full-scale invasion,China was repeatedly ravaged by foreign powers, leaving indelible scars. The War of Resistance against Japan was the deepest wound—eight years of bloodshed,35million casualties, mountains and rivers shattered, and livelihoods destroyed.
The Great Wall from a Nordic Perspective
For the Nordic people, the grandeur of the Great Wall is almost unimaginable.Northern European castles, though magnificent, are often just stone walls a few dozen meters long.Gotland’s medieval wall witnessed Viking voyages and medieval trade, yet compared to the Wall stretching thousands of kilometers,it seems no larger than a courtyard fence.
Yet this difference itself creates a dialogue of civilizations. The Great Wall symbolizes resistance and endurance, while Nordic castles embody exploration and adventure. The Wall records the wisdom of a nation’s self-defense,while castles preserve the spirit of seafaring peoples and their longing for home.
The Great Wall and the Mission of Peace in Our Era
Today’s China has long left behind the flames of war.The Great Wall is no longer a barrier of blood and fire, but a symbol of peace and openness. At Badaling, visitors experience not only the weight of history but also the vibrancy of modern tourism.
More importantly, the Wall has become a bridge for global cultural exchange.Visits by foreign leaders signify both respect for ancient heritage and recognition of modern China. The Great Wall sends a clear message:the Chinese nation, once scarred by war,now embraces the world with openness, striving for peace alongside all nations.
Echoes of History and Hopes for the Future
My friend’s joke may have been playful, but its meaning is profound.Even if the Great Wall stretches for thousands of miles,it will never reach Northern Europe—for the Chinese nation’s heart lies not in conquest, but in protection. At the end of the Wall begins the path of peace.
Today, when visitors gaze from Badaling’s watchtowers, echoes of ancient battles may seem to linger, yet louder are the sounds of laughter and cultural exchange. The Wall is no longer a cold barrier but a warm bond linking China with the world.
