Wuhan East Lake:Clear Waters Reflect Chu Charm,Poetry Through All Seasons

(本报武汉讯)初秋的武汉东湖，迎来一年中景致最舒朗的季节。步入“碧潭观鱼”景观，湖水澄澈，水草摇曳，鱼虾浅游，众多市民、游客凭栏俯瞰，享受惬意时光。这看似寻常的一幕，却藏着东湖10余年打造世界名湖、人民乐园的“绿色答卷”。

In early autumn,Wuhan’s East Lake enters its most pleasant season of the year.At the“Bitan Guanyu”(Clear Pool to View Fish)attraction,the lake water is crystal clear,aquatic plants sway,and fish and shrimp swim leisurely near the surface.Many citizens and tourists lean against the railings to enjoy the tranquil moment.This seemingly ordinary scene reflects the“green answer sheet”of more than a decade of efforts to build East Lake into a world-renowned lake and a paradise for the people.

武汉因水而生、因水而盛，166个湖泊星罗棋布，33平方公里的东湖如一颗明珠，镶嵌在城市中央。

Wuhan was born of water and thrives on water.With166lakes scattered across the city,the33-square-kilometer East Lake shines like a pearl embedded in its heart.

为打造民众亲近自然的“生态绿心”，自2009年开始，东湖通过全面退渔、全面截污、湖内清淤、水系连通、生态修复、监控监管等综合措施，治理修复水生态。

To create an“ecological green heart”where people can connect with nature,since2009East Lake has implemented comprehensive measures such as removing all fishing activities,intercepting pollution,dredging sediments,connecting waterways,restoring ecosystems,and strengthening monitoring and supervision.

现今，东湖水质常年保持在Ⅲ类，达到近40年最优。优良的水生态也滋润着万千生物。128公里湖岸轮廓，蜿蜒出独具特色的城市湿地景观，105公里滨湖绿道串联森林、湿地、花海，10余个植物专类园构成“春樱秋桂、夏荷冬梅”的四季花开盛景，数百种珍稀鸟类“安家”湖山之中。

Today,the water quality of East Lake has remained at Class III for years,its best level in nearly40years.The healthy aquatic ecosystem nourishes countless living creatures.Along its128-kilometer shoreline unfolds a unique urban wetland landscape.A105-kilometer greenway links forests,wetlands,and flower seas.More than ten specialized botanical gardens together create a four-season floral spectacle of“cherry blossoms in spring,osmanthus in autumn,lotus in summer,and plum blossoms in winter.”Hundreds of rare bird species have made their homes around the lake and mountains.

Even in a megacity,humans and nature can coexist harmoniously.Wuhan’s East Lake offers such a model and shows us the ecological beauty of Chinese cities,”said Huang Mei,Deputy Director of Spain’sEuropean Overseas Chinese Voice,during her visit with overseas Chinese media in Wuhan.

东湖之美，不仅在湖光山色，还在楚风汉韵。行吟阁与沧浪亭、橘颂亭、屈原纪念馆串联起屈子文化景观群，梅岭一号、长天楼、苍柏园、朱碑亭等红色景点连成“伟人足迹”，九女墩、蛮王塚等文物建筑散布其间……楚文化、红色文化、英雄文化等环湖而兴，与山水之景共同吸引着海内外无数游客。

The beauty of East Lake lies not only in its scenery but also in its Chu heritage and Han charm.The Xinging Pavilion,Canglang Pavilion,Orange Ode Pavilion,and Qu Yuan Memorial Hall form a cultural cluster dedicated to the great poet Qu Yuan.Revolutionary landmarks such as Meiling No.1,Changtian Tower,Cypress Garden,and Zhu Monument Pavilion outline the“footprints of great leaders.”Historical relics like JiunüMound and Barbarian King’s Tomb are scattered across the area.Together,Chu culture,revolutionary culture,and heroic culture flourish around the lake,attracting countless visitors from home and abroad.

目前，“来武汉、游东湖，逛绿道、品文化”成为武汉经典旅游线路；“跳东湖”“凌波门观日出”已是全国性网红IP；东湖樱花园成为世界级赏花胜地。据统计，2024年，东湖风景区接待游客超2550万人次。

Today,“Visit Wuhan,tour East Lake,walk the greenway,and enjoy the culture”has become a classic travel route.Activities such as“jumping into East Lake”and“watching the sunrise at Lingbo Gate”have become popular nationwide trends.The East Lake Cherry Blossom Garden is now a world-class flower-viewing destination.In2024,the scenic area received more than25.5million visitors.

Strolling along East Lake,one sees green hills mirrored in the waters,with the city and the lake blending harmoniously.“East Lake is Wuhan’s‘international reception hall’for guests from around the world,”said Du Bingyu,Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Cambodia’sCambodian Chinese Daily.In his view,Wuhan embraces the world with openness,and its stories of ecology,culture,and development will ripple outward with the shimmering waves.
