The Soul of“Tuguaihua”:From Liu Sanjie’s Songs to the Echoes of the Rongjiang River

In the deep mountains of northwestern Guangxi,

the waters of Long’an’s Huangjin River,Xiaochangan, and Beijiang gently kiss the rocky shores. From Rong’an to Rongshui, from Luocheng to Liucheng, flows an ancient rhythm—not of wind or water, but of the human heart itself—Tuguaihua,the“earth-blended tongue.”

It is neither pure Zhuang nor standard Chinese,

but a dialect as free as mountain songs—rough yet tender, humorous yet wise.Every syllable is like a bamboo leaf from the hills, carrying the freshness of dew and the fragrance of time.

Mountains as Strings,Rivers as Music

Mountains rise in Rongshui, rivers gleam in Luocheng, oranges glow in Rong’an,and wide fields spread in Liucheng. For centuries, this has been a land where the Zhuang,Han,Mulao, and Miao peoples have lived together.Through labor and song, they wove their languages into one—the living tapestry ofTuguaihua.

The wordguaimeans“to mix,”“to blend,”or“to turn cleverly.”Tuguaihuakeeps the bones of ancient Chinese yet breathes with the pulse of Zhuang,Mulao, and Miao-Dong languages.Listen closely, and you will hear echoes of the Central Plains mingled with the breath of southern hills.

It is both a fossil of language and a living vessel of culture.

Liu Sanjie’s Songs, the Voice of the Earth

Legend has it that Liu Sanjie’s songs first took flight from these mountains and rivers. Her voice echoed not only through the valleys but rooted itself deeply in the melodies ofTuguaihua.

She sang of love and labor,of injustice and freedom. Her tone carried the soul of the Zhuang and the rhythm of the Han;in one simple phrase ofTuguaihua, she could move both heaven and earth.

“One must have heart;a song must have soul.”That soul is the essence ofTuguaihua—an expression unbound by books, born from mountains, rivers, and pure inspiration.

It is not the language of academia but the poetry of the wild;not standardized words, but the breath of humanity.Wander through a village whereTuguaihuais spoken, and its melody will call to your soul—deeper and older than the drums of the Nile.

The Root of Language Is the Root of the Land

They say,“Where there isTuguaihua, there is home smoke rising.”

Morning calls in the fields,evening chats by the stream,a child’s first playful“Tongnian,”an elder’s half-joking tale—not performance,but living memory.

TheguaiofTuguaihuais a turn of wisdom—blending tones of different peoples, softening speech into shared music.

A simple greeting,“Ni chi ba lo?”—with its lilting“ai lo”or“ya le”—carries warmth and kinship. Here, language is not just communication;it is the meeting of hearts.

From Mouth to Heart:A Living Heritage

Today, young people speak more Mandarin, and city noise has dimmed the mountain echoes.Yet,in the markets and playgrounds of those hills, the“flavor ofTuguaihua”still drifts in the air.

Like hidden roots,it quietly nourishes a people’s sense of belonging.

Language is the DNA of culture. When a dialect fades,a nation’s memory dims.Tuguaihuais the cultural code of Rongshui,Rong’an,Luocheng, and Liucheng.

Echoes of the Huangjin and Rongjiang Rivers

At dusk,a gentle wind ripples over the Wuyang River.Reflections of mountains tremble on the water as someone softly hums an ancient song:

“River winding round the hills,Songs soaring through the sky,Love knows no distance—It lives for three lives and beyond.”

That voice, tinged with the melody ofTuguaihua,is ancient and tender—like a bird from antiquity still singing through the forest of time.

Perhaps Liu Sanjie’s spirit lives in this song—she sang from Luocheng to Yizhou, from Liuzhou to Guilin, withTuguaihuaas her voice of truth and freedom.

She proved that a dialect can bear the poetry and dignity of an entire people.

Nordic Reflection:Language Flows Like Water,Culture Stands Like Mountains

The rivers and hills of Rongshui,Rong’an,Luocheng, and Liucheng teach a harmony of softness and strength.Tuguaihuaembodies it—humble yet dignified, unrecorded yet unforgettable.

When we whisper again,“Ong na hei ya,”we are not merely reviving a dialect, but awakening the living memory of a civilization.

For it is Liu Sanjie’s soul, the echo of the Rongjiang’s waves—the beating heart of northern Guangxi’s living heritage.
