Reflections on the 2026 Spring Festival Reception of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden and Rhythms of the East
(Stockholm,Nordic Chinese Times)On the evening of February 10, 2026,Stockholm’s winter night was illuminated by art.
The 2026 Spring Festival Reception, hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, was grandly held at Dansens Hus in the city center.More than 700 guests from Swedish political, cultural, business, academic circles, as well as the overseas Chinese community, gathered together in the snow-lit Nordic night to enjoy a rich“Year of the Horse cultural feast”infused with Eastern aesthetics and contemporary vitality—the large-scale dance production Rhythms of the East presented by the China Coal Mine Art Troupe.
The theater was filled to capacity. As the lights dimmed, the curtain slowly rose to the solemn melodies of the national anthems of China and Sweden.Acting Chargéd’Affaires Wan Degang delivered a warm and inspiring speech, extending heartfelt New Year greetings to all guests.
Mr.Wan noted that over the past year,China successfully achieved its major economic and social development goals.Economic performance remained stable with steady progress, new quality productive forces accelerated their growth, scientific and technological innovations continued to emerge, and Chinese modernization advanced with firmer and more powerful steps. In the face of a complex and challenging international environment,China has remained committed to pursuing high-quality development alongside high-level opening-up,advancing major-country diplomacy, and contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions to global governance, climate change, and peaceful development.
Turning to China–Sweden relations,Mr.Wan emphasized that bilateral ties have maintained strong momentum in recent years.High-level exchanges have become increasingly frequent, bilateral trade has grown steadily, and practical cooperation in green development, technological innovation, healthcare, and cultural exchange has yielded fruitful results, bringing tangible benefits to both peoples. He stressed that the deep mutual trust and solid cooperation accumulated over75years of diplomatic relations provide a strong foundation for the two countries to move forward together into a new stage of development.
Looking ahead to2026,Mr.Wan stated that China will continue to promote high-quality development through high-level opening-up,further deepen comprehensive reform, advance common prosperity in a steady manner, and continuously improve people’s livelihoods—writing a new chapter in the“China miracle.”China stands ready to work with Sweden to enhance mutual understanding and trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, expand people-to-people exchanges, better benefit both nations and their peoples, and jointly inject positive energy into global peace, stability, progress, and prosperity.
Mr.Wan also highly praised the long-standing contributions of overseas Chinese in Sweden,Chinese-funded institutions, and Chinese students in promoting China–Sweden friendship. He encouraged everyone to continue serving as bridges between the two countries, tell China’s stories well, foster people-to-people connectivity, and wished all present steady strides and great success in the Year of the Horse, achieving new accomplishments in their respective fields and contributing further to the continued positive development of China–Sweden relations.
When Art Takes the Baton of the Times
As art took center stage,Rhythms of the Eastunfolded in a sweeping narrative.Anchored in classical Chinese dance, the performance traversed history and contemporary life alike:from the grandeur of the Tang dynasty evoked inNew Year·Rainbow SkirtsandHeart Toward Chang’an,to the delicate expressions of vitality and Eastern aesthetics inBird Bun,Bathing in Spring, andSymphony of Blossoms. From Silk Road–themed ensemble dances to poetic recreations of compassion, craftsmanship, literature, and emotion in works such asGreat Physician’s Sincerity,Green-Glazed Figurines,There Is a Beauty, andThe Peacock Flies Southeast, the program culminated inA Thousand-Year Gaze Back, where past and present converged, and time resonated with civilization.
Light, costume, music, and movement complemented one another seamlessly, allowing Swedish audiences to understand China and draw closer to its cultural soul through each chapter.
As one of China’s national-level comprehensive performing arts institutions, the China Coal Mine Art Troupe has, since its founding in 1947, remained rooted in the people and responsive to the times. Its creative output spans dance, music, and theater, earning numerous national awards. This visit to Sweden was not only a high-caliber artistic presentation, but also a vivid lesson in civilizational dialogue. The audience watched intently, with waves of applause and cheers repeatedly lifting the atmosphere to new heights.
For me personally, the performance carried an added emotional resonance. As a child of China’s coal mining communities, memories of coal-mine cultural life from over three decades ago remain vivid. It was an era written in song, dance, and collective spirit by generations of industrial workers.Today, seeing a national arts troupe from the coal mining system travel thousands of miles to perform on Sweden’s artistic stage felt both intimate and deeply proud.
Sweden is renowned for its industrial modernization and strong working-class cultural heritage. Many audience members remarked afterward that the“gentleness”of Eastern art lies not in spectacle, but in strength of form and depth of soul.Nordic friends also expressed sincere admiration for China’s present-day capacity to carry its culture far abroad—supported by economic strength and creative vitality—praising both the scale and sustainability of such cultural journeys.
The recurring Silk Road imagery in the performance was especially moving against Stockholm’s winter night:inside the theater, camel bells echoed and sleeves fluttered;outside,snow-covered streetlights glowed beneath silent stars. In that moment,I was reminded of Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, who a century ago followed the Silk Road routes on camelback across Xinjiang’s deserts, discovering the ruins of Loulan near Lop Nur.History’s echoes intertwined with tonight’s dance steps—a testament to the enduring continuity of civilizational encounters.
Standing at the new starting point of the75th anniversary of China–Sweden diplomatic relations,Rhythms of the Eastwas more than a performance—it was a blessing and a declaration:on the new journey ahead,China–Sweden cultural exchange will continue at full gallop toward shared success.
Let art be the bridge, let dance bear witness, and let understanding and friendship flourish endlessly in the Nordic winter night.
