From Ingmar Bergman to the Ningbo Film Pioneers:Where Civilizations Meet,Beyond the Boundaries of Cinema

From Ingmar Bergman to the Ningbo Film Pioneers:Where Civilizations Meet,Beyond the Boundaries of Cinema

From Norway’s majestic Pulpit Rock to Beijing, and from the banks of Tianjin’s Haihe River to Ningbo on the shores of the East China Sea,my journey has followed the remarkable footsteps of China’s reform and opening-up.
Little did I expect that this journey would lead me to an unexpected encounter with a celebration of cinema.
On October17,the2026Yangtze River Delta International Youth Film Week opens in Ningbo, bringing together filmmakers, artists and emerging talents in a vibrant celebration of cinematic creativity.
Whenever I think of cinema, one name immediately comes to mind:Ingmar Bergman, the legendary Swedish filmmaker.
Renowned worldwide for masterpieces such asThe Seventh Seal,Wild Strawberries, andFanny and Alexander,Bergman explored the profound mysteries of life, faith, love and death through the extraordinary language of cinema.
With his unforgettable black-and-white imagery and deeply introspective storytelling,he demonstrated that cinema is far more than entertainment. It is a mirror reflecting the deepest dimensions of the human soul.
Yet arriving in Ningbo brings another remarkable chapter of film history to mind:the Ningbo Film Pioneers,a distinguished community of filmmakers and entrepreneurs whose contributions helped shape the development of Chinese cinema.
From Zhang Shichuan, one of the founding figures of China's early film industry,to Run Run Shaw(Shao Yifu)and Runme Shaw(Shao Renmei),whose entrepreneurial vision helped transform Chinese-language cinema into an international cultural force, generations of filmmakers with roots in Ningbo and its surrounding region have brought Chinese stories to the screen and introduced Eastern culture to audiences around the world.
One represents the philosophical and artistic exploration of Nordic cinema;the other embodies more than a century of determination, innovation and achievement in China's film industry.
Separated by thousands of miles, these two cinematic traditions nevertheless speak a common language:
To capture the spirit of an era through moving images,to explore humanity through art,and to connect civilizations through storytelling.
Today, the Yangtze River Delta International Youth Film Week brings a new generation of filmmakers into the spotlight.
The announced lineup includes celebrated figures such as Simon Yam,Liang Jing, veteran actor Niu Ben and Maksim, alongside younger talents including Guan Xiaotong,Meng Yuchen and Liu Yu.
What makes this gathering particularly meaningful is the meeting of generations.
From distinguished veteran artists whose careers span decades to energetic young performers just beginning their journeys, filmmakers of different ages and backgrounds will come together in Ningbo.
Is this not the very essence of artistic inheritance—one generation passing its dreams, creativity and inspiration to the next?
Ningbo itself provides a fitting setting for such an encounter.
For centuries, this historic port city has served as an important gateway along the Maritime Silk Road.
Merchant ships once departed from its harbors carrying silk, porcelain and tea to distant lands, building bridges of trade and cultural exchange between China and the wider world.
Today, cinema has become another vessel of cultural exchange—one that sails across borders not with cargo, but with stories, emotions, imagination and shared human experiences.
I look forward to a day when the artistic spirit of Sweden's Ingmar Bergman and the pioneering traditions of Ningbo's filmmakers meet through the lenses of a new generation of international storytellers.
Imagine the forests of Scandinavia and the morning mist rising over the Baltic Sea appearing alongside the gentle rain of Jiangnan and the rhythmic tides of the East China Sea.
Different landscapes, different histories, different languages—yet all capable of expressing the same universal emotions:joy and sorrow, hope and despair, love and longing.
This is the extraordinary power of cinema.
As the tides surge through the Yangtze River Delta, the silver screen illuminates the future.
From Bergman to the Ningbo Film Pioneers, from Northern Europe to China, cinema allows us to cross mountains and oceans, discover one another and encounter the richness of human civilization.
Tonight, the screens of Ningbo are about to light up.
May every beam of light illuminate a story worth telling.
And may every young filmmaker, beneath the vast constellation of world cinema, discover a unique light of their own.
For beyond geography, language and cultural boundaries, cinema reminds us that humanity shares one world—and countless stories waiting to be told.
